(Copa Libertadores Final)
🇧🇷 Atlético Mineiro 1-3 Botafogo
Atlético Mineiro fell short in their quest for a second Copa Libertadores title despite playing with a numerical advantage for nearly the entire match. Botafogo, seeking their first-ever Copa Libertadores triumph, overcame the odds to claim a historic 3-1 victory.
The drama began in the very first minute, as Botafogo’s defensive midfielder Gregore was shown a red card for a reckless tackle, forcing his team to play the remainder of the final with 10 men. Despite the disadvantage, Botafogo delivered a resilient and clinical performance, outclassing Atlético Mineiro to secure their maiden title.
The Copa Libertadores final last featured a two-legged format in 2018, which also marked the last time a non-Brazilian club won the title. That year’s all-Argentine final saw River Plate defeat Boca Juniors, with the second leg controversially relocated to Madrid due to security concerns.
Since 2019, the trophy has been dominated by Brazilian clubs. Flamengo defeated River Plate in 2019, denying them back-to-back titles. Palmeiras followed with consecutive wins in all-Brazilian finals, first against Santos in 2020 and then against Flamengo in 2021. Flamengo returned to win in 2022, defeating Athletico Paranaense, while Fluminense clinched the 2023 title with a victory over Boca Juniors. This year, Botafogo continued Brazil’s dominance, overcoming Atlético Mineiro to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
