Austria 0 – Hungary 2. Hungary upsets Austria.

Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, Group F

Austria 0 – Hungary 2

Adam Szalai 63’

Zoltan Stieber 87’

We didn’t expect this. Austria falls in their first match in the Euro 2016. David Alaba almost gave Austria the perfect start with what would have been the quickest goal in the competition. His shot from almost 30 yards knocked the bottom of the post.

After an entertaining but goalless first half, Adam Szalai opened the scoring in the 63rd minute. Hungary was up 1-0.

Austria was aware that their next Group F opponent will  be Portugal, and 3 points here will put them in a healthy position when they face them. They pushed more men forward to break the stubborn Hungarian team.  Pushing forward and forgetting the defensive roles cost them Szalai’s goal.

Three minutes after going down, Aleksandar Dragovic was sent off for receiving a second yellow card.

Chasing the match with a man down, and against a well-prepared team that came into the match knowing they were the underdog was a tough thing to overcome for Austria.

Hungary was finding more pockets of space to counterattack. A final push by Austria in an attempt to get an equalizer created a great opportunity for Hungarian counter-attack. A lob pass from Tamas Priskin found Zoltan Steiber face to face with Austria’s goalkeeper. A calm and composed Stieber, who had just been in the game for 7 minutes, chipped the ball over the keeper to double the lead for Hungary. It was all over at 2-0 in the 87th minute.

Group F looks like this at the moment……

Portugal 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Iceland 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
