Angers wonder season?

Angers wonder season?

Just a season ago, Angers was competing in Ligue 2. If our math is done right, there were at least 20 clubs that should be better than them.  Not much is expected from a team that just gained promotion to the top division of the French football system. We are almost halfway into the 2015-16 Ligue 1 season, and only PSG sits above them. At the time this article is being written, 18 matches have been played, leaving 1 more match to hit the official midpoint of the season. Angers sits 2nd place in a ‘UEFA Champions League’ qualifications position, tied in points with Monaco. We know Leicester City is doing wonders in the BPL, but they’re not a promoted side.

Angers has not won the French title in their history, and for any other team to win the Ligue 1 this season, they would have to steal it from PSG. Every positive statistics you search for is next to the PSG crest at this moment.  With 50% of the season on record, it is a safe bet to say that the title will be defended and kept in the French capital. As dominant as PSG has been, Angers were able to avoid a defeat at home to the PSG. With the exception of ball possession, it would be a close game and a point was deserved for both parties.

Their 18th match of the season is against the most successful club in league, Saint-Etienne. a win by the right goal margin will ensure that Angers go into the second half to the season as the ‘vice winners’ of the league. How they will perform in the return matches for the remainder of the season will determine if this newly promoted side will have a chance to compete with the best of UEFA in the 2016-17 season. Mathematically, everything is still possible for Angers, even relegation.

After the first half of Ligue 1. PSG is still the undefeated defending champions. They remain the only team with a 50%+ win rate on the table. The leave the rest of the pack 19 points behind to compete for silver and bronze. To put into perspective what the 19 points lead PSG has in the league, you will have to look at the rest of the table and see that it takes 11 points for second placed Monaco to drop into the relegation zone.
