And the “Star of the Weekend” will be going to …

Picking the outright brightest star is never easy, and sometimes blinding.

The final shortlist for #SOTW included …

James Rodriguez (Granada – Real Madrid**) {Spanish La Liga)} – with Barcelona already with a victory, Rodriguez winning goal kept Real Madrid on course for the league title and a potential season double.

Manuel Lanzini (West Ham United** – Tottenham Hotspur) {Premier League} – for possibly scoring the title-deciding goal for the 2016/17 Premier League season. Lanzini’s scored the only goal of the match to give West Ham United a victory that also crumbled Tottenham’s title dreams and handed Chelsea a major boost as they march towards the title.

Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid** – Eibar) {Spanish La Liga}  – for scoring the goal that allowed Atletico Madrid to get a victory over Eibar and take advantage of Sevilla’s inability to secure maximum points against Real Sociedad. With two matches left in the season, this victory should see Atletico Madrid finish the season with a direct qualification to the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League.

Gnaly Maxwell Cornet (Lyon** – Nantes) {French Ligue 1} – for scoring a goal to give Lyon the lead and another to restore the lead and see Lyon come out victorious at home over Nantes.

Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus** – Torino) {Italian Serie A} – for scoring a late goal for Juventus to get a point against Torino while avoiding a first home defeat of the season.

Fernando Llorente (Swansea City** – Everton) – scoring the winning goal to put the destiny of relegation-threatened Swansea City into their own hands.

But the SOTW will have to go to

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

(Borussia Dortmund** – Hoffenheim) {German Bundesliga}

For scoring the winning goal that gave Borussia Dortmund an important victory over Hoffenheim. The victory puts Dortmund in the driving seat in the race for a third place finish and a direct qualification to the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League.

Aubameyang’s goal allowed him to be the joint top scorer with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
**The player’s team.
