After the THIRD round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

ROUND THREE:

NOVEMBER 29, 2022

Netherlands 2-0 Qatar (Group A)
Ecuador 1-2 Senegal (Group A)
Wales 0-3 England (Group B)
Iran 0-1 United States (Group B)

Netherlands just needed a point to advance from Group A; and they did that win a 2-0 win against an already eliminated Qatar side that was playing for their national pride.
Ecuador was fine to advance with a point from a draw but Senegal needed a win to advance (at Ecuador’s expense). Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winning goal in the 70th minute to restore Senegal’s lead and hand them a 2-1 win against Ecuador.
Marcus Rashford contributed two goals (including the game-winner) as England put three goals past Wales in the second half to advance to the ‘Round of 16’ as winners of Group B with a 3-0 win over Wales.
United States got the win they needed against Iran to advance to the Round of 16. A draw would’ve advanced Iran but Chrisitan Pulisic’s goal in the 38th minute ended up being the only goal of the game. United States won 1-0.

GROUP A – STANDINGS
1| Netherlands – 7 points
2| Senegal – 6 points
3| Ecuador – 4 points
4| Qatar – 0 points

GROUP B – STANDINGS

NOVEMBER 30, 2022

Poland 0-2 Argentina (Group C)
Saudi Arabia 1-2 Mexico (Group C)
Tunisia 1-0 France (Group D)
Australia 1-0 Denmark (Group D)

Argentina got the win they needed against Poland to advance from Group C as group winners. An early goal in the opening minute of the second half from Alexis Mac Allister broke the Polish defense and got Argentina on track to a 2-0 win.
Mexico won the game against Saudi Arabia but not by the margin to get them above Poland in the Group C standings. Poland advanced to the “Round of 16” with Argentina.
France could afford not to field their first options in their final group game. They ended up suffering a 1-0 defeat against Tunisia but the result made little difference to the destiny of both nations in the tournament.
Mathew Leckie’s goal in the 60th minute advanced Australia to the ‘Round of 16’ at the expense of Tunisia and Denmark.

GROUP C – STANDINGS
1| Argentina – 6 points
2| Poland – 4 points
3| Mexico – 4 points
4| Saudi Arabia – 3 points

GROUP D – STANDINGS
1| France – 6 points
2| Australia – 6 points
3| Tunisia – 4 points

DECEMBER 1, 2022

Japan 2-1 Spain (Group E)
Costa Rica 2-4 Germany (Group E)
Croatia 0-0 Belgium (Group F)
Canada 1-2 Morocco (Group F)

Japan does the improbable again by coming from a goal down to win Group E through a 2-1 win over Spain.
Germany did their part by getting the win against Costa Rica, but the 4-1 win was not enough to advance Germany from Group E as they needed Spain to beat Japan. In the end, Germany trying to save themselves saved Spain from early elimination. Japan and Spain advanced from Group E to the ‘Round of 16’.
Belgium had a plethora of chances against Croatia to get the win that would’ve advanced them to the Round of 16 but couldn’t hit the back of the net. A goalless draw between Belgium and Croatia sent Croatia through to the Round of 16 as runner-up in Group F.
A 2-1 lead against Canada in the first half remained unchanged at the final whistle for Morocco to advance to the knockout round as winners of Group F.

GROUP E – STANDINGS
1| Japan – 6 points
2| Spain – 4 points
3| Germany – 4 points
4| Costa Rica – 3 points

GROUP F – STANDINGS
1| Morocco – 7 points
2| Croatia – 5 points
3| Belgium – 4 points
4| Canada – 0 points

DECEMBER 2, 2022

Cameroon 1-0 Brazil (Group G)
Serbia 2-3 Switzerland (Group G)
South Korea 2-1 Portugal (Group H)
Ghana 0-2 Uruguay (Group H)

Just like France did in Group D, Brazil didn’t field their first choice option for their final match of Group D. It ended in a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon but didn’t change the fortune of both teams.
After a 2-2 draw in the first half, Remo Freuler scored the only goal of the second half to advance Switzerland with a 3-2 win against Serbia.
South Korea ended up advancing as the runner-up of Group H after their 2-1 win against Portugal was met with Uruguay’s 2-0 win against Ghana.
Another goal for Uruguay would’ve advanced them at South Korea’s expense but Ghana had other ideas.

GROUP G – STANDINGS
1| Brazil – 6 points
2| Switzerland – 6 points
3| Cameroon – 4 points
4| Serbia – 1 point

GROUP H – STANDINGS
1| Portugal – 6 points
2| South Korea – 4 points
3| Uruguay – 4 points
4| Ghana – 3 points
