2024 COPA AMERICA: after Matchday two. Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Argentina are in a comfortable state

The second round of the group stage games kicked off in the Copa America with Argentina doubling their win in Group A with a 1-0 victory against Chile, after Canada had picked up their first-ever Copa America win with a 1-0 victory against Peru. The results left Peru and Chile with a point each, while Canada moved up to second place, and Argentina maintained the top spot to advance to the knockout stage.

A 3-1 defeat to Ecuador eliminated Jamaica in Group B, while Venezuela made it two wins from two in the group to book their place in the quarterfinals, grabbing a 1-0 win over Mexico. This result put a major dent in Mexico’s hopes of making it out of the group.

In Group C, the United States fell to Panama, and Uruguay doubled their wins to eliminate Bolivia and advance from the group. This result puts a major dent in United States’ chance of advancing to the quarterfinal.

Colombia and Brazil won by 3-goal margins against Costa Rica and Paraguay, respectively. The two winners will face off in the final match of the group. Colombia has already advanced to the quarterfinal, and it is highly improbable that Brazil won’t be the team to join them from Group D.

Chile absorbed the pressure from Argentina and almost got away with it until Lautaro Martinez pounced on a loose ball in the penalty box after a corner kick to score the winning goal for Argentina in the 88th minute. This marked back-to-back games that Martinez has scored in the 88th minute after coming off the bench.

🇪🇨 Ecuador ( 3 ) – ( 1 ) 🇯🇲 Jamaica
Michail Antonio scored Jamaica’s first-ever goal in the Copa America, but it came after they were two goals down, and they couldn’t score any more goals against Ecuador. Jamaica and Ecuador were both looking to recover from defeats in their opening games in Group B, and Ecuador did so by beating Jamaica 3-1.

🇻🇪 Venezuela ( 1 ) – ( 0 ) 🇲🇽 Mexico
Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute from a penalty, allowing Venezuela to double their wins in Group B and take the top spot by beating Mexico. Orbelin Pineda had the chance to score Mexico’s equalizing goal from the penalty spot in the 87th minute but had his shot saved. Both Venezuela and Mexico were looking to secure their second win.

🇵🇦 Panama ( 2 ) – ( 1 ) 🇺🇸 United States
Despite the United States going a goal up in the 22nd minute, courtesy of Folarin Balogun, Timothy Weah picking up a red card in the 18th minute left the United States with a numerical disadvantage that played a role in their defeat against Panama. The lead only lasted for about four minutes before Cesar Blackman scored Panama’s equalizer.
A massive win for Panama in Group C. Second-half substitute Jose Fajardo scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute.

🇺🇾 Uruguay ( 5 ) – ( 0 ) 🇧🇴 Bolivia
Five goals from five different goalscorers.
Uruguay secured a spot in the quarterfinals with their second win in Group C, thrashing Bolivia 5-0 in the process. Bolivia is eliminated with this result.

🇨🇴 Colombia ( 3 ) – ( 0 ) 🇨🇷 Costa Rica
Costa Rica couldn’t put up the same defensive effort they used to earn a goalless draw in their opening match against Brazil when they faced Colombia. After a goalless first half-hour, Luis Diaz scored the game’s opening goal from a penalty in the 31st minute to give Colombia a lead that lasted until about the hour mark, when Davinson Sanchez doubled the score with a headed goal in the 59th minute. Jhon Cordoba scored Colombia’s third goal of the game not too long after that in the 62nd minute. Colombia picked up their second win in Group D and a spot in the quarterfinal as a result.

🇵🇾 Paraguay ( 1 ) – ( 4 ) 🇧🇷 Brazil
Brazil and Paraguay were both looking for their first win in Group D, and it was Brazil that grabbed it. Brazil made amends for the points dropped in a 1-1 draw against Costa Rica with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay, who are now bottom of the group without a point.

Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela are the teams that are entering the final round of group stage with room for other results that are not wins.

🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇵🇪 Peru
🇨🇦 Canada vs. 🇨🇱 Chile

In Group A, Canada and Chile will both count on Argentina to do them a favor by beating Peru, while the two contest for a spot in the quarterfinal of the Copa America. A draw is enough for Canada as long as Peru is winless against Argentina, but Chile will need a win.

🇲🇽 Mexico vs. 🇪🇨 Ecuador
🇯🇲 Jamaica vs. 🇻🇪 Venezuela

Jamaica will need a win by a sizable margin against Venezuela to stand a chance of advancing to the round of 16 from Group B. Venezuela is in the quarterfinal.
The highlighted battle is between Ecuador and Mexico. The Mexicans need a win.
Jamaica and Venezuela will be playing to complete their scheduled fixtures. The result makes no difference, as Jamaica is eliminated and Venezuela has already advanced.

🇺🇸 United States vs. 🇺🇾 Uruguay
🇧🇴 Bolivia vs. 🇵🇦 Panama

Should Panama come out with a win over Bolivia, the only way for the United States to advance from Group C is to beat Uruguay. If Panama picks up a sizable win to overcome the 2-goal difference between themselves and the United States, the pressure will be on the United States to secure a convincing win over Uruguay to cover the goal gap.
Bolivia is virtually eliminated. They have no goals to their name after two games and will need a win by a margin of at least 8 goals to stand a chance.

🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🇨🇴 Colombia
🇨🇷 Costa Rica vs. 🇵🇾 Paraguay

Colombia has clinched a place in the quarterfinal, but Brazil hasn’t. The two sides will play their final match in Group D with the pressure on Brazil to come out with a result. Fortunately for Brazil, the three-goal margin win against Paraguay comes in handy in the standings, since Colombia beat Costa Rica 3-0 in the last round.
The only way Brazil will miss out on the quarterfinal is if they suffer defeat against Colombia while Costa Rica picks up a win against Paraguay. For that scenario to affect Brazil’s odds, there has to be a swing of four goals in Costa Rica’s favor.
