2018/19 UEFA Champions League – Round 6 – A few upsets in results but the pre-tournament favorites made it to the Round-of-16

The teams from Spain, Italy, and England remain in the UEFA club competition but only English Premier League that had a 100% record in advancing into the Round of 16.

All 4 teams (Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United) representing England advanced to the knockout stage.
3 of the 4 teams (Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid) representing Spain (La Liga) advanced from their ‘Group’ with Valencia continuing their journey in the Europa League.
2 of the 4 teams (Juventus, Roma) representing Italy (Serie A) advanced, while the other half (Inter Milan, Napoli) will be trying their luck with the Europa League.

No league that was represented by 1 team will be present in the 201/19 UEFA Champions League knock-out stage.
Belgium (Club Brugge), Turkey (Galatasaray), Czech Republic (Viktoria Plzen), and Ukraine (Shakhtar Donetsk) will have their teams fall into the UEFA Europa League, while Serbia (Red Star Belgrade), Greece (AEK Athens), and Switzerland (Young Boys) have had their representation eliminated.

Hoffenheim was the only German team eliminated while Dortmund, Schalke, and Bayern Munich advanced.
Monaco was the only French Ligue 1 team eliminated while Paris St. Germain and Lyon move on the next round.
And despite dominating domestically, PSV Eindhoven was the only Dutch Eredivisie side eliminated while Ajax moves on to the next round.

Group A
Club Brugge 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Monaco 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund – Raphael Guerreiro 15’ 88’
Atletico Madrid was held back from winning the group after a stalemate with Club Brugge. An already eliminated Monaco sided left the competition winless after Raphael Guerreiro delivered the blows through two goals for Dortmund to advance as Group A winners with Atletico Madrid.

Group B
Inter Milan 1-1 PSV Eindhoven
Inter Milan – Mauro Icardi 73’
PSV Eindhoven – Irving Lozano13’

Barcelona 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Barcelona – Ousmane Dembele 7’
Tottenham Hotspur – Lucas Moura 85’

The odds were in Inter Milan’s favor before kick-off but they will have to settle for a place in the Europa League Round of 32.
With the help of PSV Eindhoven at the San Siro, Lucas Moura scored a late equalizing goal in the 85th-minute at the Camp Nou to secure a place in the Round of 16 for Tottenham.
Tottenham moves on to the Round of 16 with group leaders Barcelona.

Group C
Liverpool 1-0 Napoli
Liverpool – Mohamed Salah 34’

Red Star Belgrade 1-4 Paris St. Germain
Red Star Belgrade – Mario Gobeljic 56’
Paris St. Germain – Edinson Cavani 10’ Neymar 40’ Marquinhos 74’ Kylian Mbappe 90’+2

Despite defeat in their opening match and dropping points against Napoli, Paris St. Germain wins the group through an emphatic victory against Red Star Belgrade.

Liverpool had to win, and that was what they did.
Napoli’s first defeat cost them a place in the Round of 16.
The final round in Group C started with Napoli in pole position and in need of just a draw against Liverpool to advance to the knock-out stage. Mohamed Salah’s goal in the first half, a late save from Allison Becker, and the backing of the Anfield crowd helped Liverpool to seal a victory and move on to the knockout stage with Paris St. Germain.

Group D
Schalke 04 1-0 Lokomotiv Moscow
Schalke 04 – Alessandro Schopf 90+1

Galatasaray 2-3 Porto
Galatasaray – Sofiane Feghouli 45+1’(pen) Eren Derdiyok 65’
Porto – Felipe 17’ Moussa Marega 42’(pen) Sergio Oliveira 57’

Lokomotiv lost a place in the Europa League after conceding a late goal to Schalke.
Had it not been Alessandro Schopf’s injury-time goal for Schalke to win at home against Lokomotiv Moscow, Sofiane Feghouli’s penalty miss would have cost Galatasaray a ticket to join the Europa League.
Porto wins the group unbeaten and moves on with Schalke 04.

No movements were made as the results kept all the teams in their pre-kickoff position

Group E
Ajax 3-3 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich – Robert Lewandowski 13’ 87’(pen) Kingsley Coman 90’

Benfica 1-0 AEK Athens
Benfica – Alex Grimaldo 88’

Robert Lewandowski scored two goals to move to the top of the goalscoring list.
Not much changed in Group E as Bayern Munich wins the group after a thrilling 6-goal match at the Amsterdam-Arena.
Before Kingsley Coman restored Bayern’s lead in the 90th minute, Robert Lewandowski scored a penalty in the 87th-minute to get Bayern back to level terms after they lost their lead with just 8 minutes of regulation time left to be played. Nicolas Tagliafico ensured his team stayed unbeaten at home.

Benfica and AEK Athens had nothing but pride to play for in their final group match.
Alex Grimaldo’s late goal for Benfica ensured that AEK Athens become the only team to exit the competition without a point.

Group F
Manchester City 2-1 Hoffenheim
Manchester City – Leroy Sane 45+1’ 61’
Hoffenheim – Andrej Kramaric 16’(pen)

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Lyon
Shakhtar Donetsk – Junior Moraes 22’
Lyon – Nabil Fekir 65’

Nabil Fekir’s goal sent Lyon to the knockout stage after avoiding defeat in Ukraine. Shakhtar Donetsk will have to settle for a place in the Europa League, thanks to Leroy Sane scoring two goals to bring Manchester City from a goal down to eliminate Hoffenheim from the competition.

Group G
Real Madrid 0-3 CSKA Moscow
CSKA Moscow – Fedor Chalov 37’ Georgi Shchennikov 43; Amor Sigurdsson 73’

Viktoria Plzen 2-1 Roma
Viktoria Plzen – Jan Kovarik 62’ Tomas Chory 72’
Roma – Cengiz Under 68’

CSKA Moscow pulled double on Real Madrid but 7 points were not enough to get CSKA out of the bottom of Group G.
Real Madrid wins Group G but CSKA Moscow will keep the bragging rights from a ‘4-0’ aggregate victory.
Unfortunately for CSKA Moscow, Viktoria Plzen got the job done on their home ground and took the ticket to Europa League from the group by beating Roma.

Group H
Valencia 2-1 Manchester United
Valencia – Carlos Soler 17’ Phil Jones 47’(og)
Manchester United – Marcus Rashford 87’

Young Boys 1-2 Juventus
Young Boys – Guillaume Hoarau 30’(pen) 68’
Juventus – Paulo Dybala 80’

It was a 2-1 defeat for the teams that had already secured a place in the knock-out round.
Juventus and Real Madrid ended the group with defeat.
