FC Barcelona opened a 3-point lead as league leaders after a Lionel Messi inspired victory in the Catalan Derby with Espanyol. Messi scored two goals from two freekicks to sandwich goals from Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele in the victory.

Lionel Messi is top ‘Assist’ provider in the league (8), and joint top scorer in the league with Girona’s Cristhian Stuani (11)

Valencia scored late to deny Sevilla of the victory that was needed to maintain the 1-point gap between themselves and the top to the league.

Atletico Madrid scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the match to beat Deportivo Alaves.

Gareth Bale scored the only goal of the match for Real Madrid to take advantage of Alaves’s defeat by picking up the needed points at Huesca to climb into the top four.

Girona suffered their first defeat in 7 matches when relegation-zoned Athletic Club took all three point from the final match of the round through a late Aritz Aduriz goal from the penalty spot.
